2014 Paul Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets
Les Caillerets is a large plot of around 10 ha in Chassagne Montrachet, thus there are crowded producers from this plot, you can easily get into a maze when trying to fish out the best producer of Les Caillerets. I can assure you, Paul Pillot will not be the best producer, despite Paul being my favorite producer in Chassagne Montrachet. Apparently over oaked with very buttery flavor upon first strike on the bouquet and the content, I suspect Paul is trying to mask some kind of weakness in this wine, and true enough, I find rough edges in the content. Fruits are moderately powerful and big, though this wine tasted a lot more like a Puligny Montrachet rather than Chassagne. I have encountered many great producers of Les Caillerets, to mention two of the top producer; Ramonet and Jean Marc Pillot. Ramonet is probably more seductive, while JM Pillot’s style is of great balance with great purity. I didn’t have the honor to drink them side by side, although my preference for now goes to JM Pillot.
