2018 Chateau Meyney, St Estephe, Cru Bourgeois Superieur
Chateau Meyney is located on an exceptional plot in St Estephe neighbouring great chateaus like Montrose, Phelan-Segur and Calon Segur. The prime location almost casted the quality of Meyney firmly in a Grand Cru territory. The composition of the wine was roughly 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot. A whiff and I was surprised by the floral fragrance, which is uncommon for a St Estephe wine (to me, they normally possessed heavy tea leaves character). Content wise, another surprise was that the wine was extremely approachable at this age, and I thought the Merlot content was easily 40% as it was really smooth and pleasant sip. Furthermore, this wine came from a well-recognized strong vintage of 2018 for Bordeaux, to be drinkable at this age was a big plus for a Bordeaux wine. The price is extremely affordable, thus it’s a no-brainer wine to pick up for drinking.
