2018 Domaine Pierre Amiot Les Combottes 1er Cru Gevrey Chambertin
The parcel or land is nested around many Grand Cru plot, and sandwiched on the border between Morey Saint Denis and Gevrey Chambertin (between the Grand Crus of Latricieres Chambertin, Mazoyeres Chambertin and Clos de la Roche), around 1930 it was almost labeled as Combottes Chambertin Grand Cru. A yearly production of 2,800 bottles. To fully express the parcels’ terroir, 33% of new oak barrels are used for the aging process. I decanted the wine for 2 hours, but I wanted a sip to have an initial evaluation right at the start. The bouquet was slightly muted with some floral presence, and the fruits were chunky and tight, and some rough edges with very fine particles coagulate together, plus the tannins were obvious. However, all these changed after 2 hours of decanting. Bouquet turned very refined with prominent chunky fruits. Content was with obvious influence of oak with buttery taste mingling with mellowed down refine fruits, the tannins were still obvious and a reflection of this wine could still age for at least a decade to reach it’s prime drinking window, plus it’s a very important pointer of a great 2018 vintage.
