2018 Olivier Guyot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux
We tasted 8 red burgundies in our office to pick what to purchase for 2H of 2021, and our staff consensus view is that this wine came out as a champion amongst the 8 bottles, this alone speaks very highly of this wine. Yearly production of 4,000+ bottles, not a large volume to speak of, and age 14 to 18 months in 50% single wine barrel and another 50% in new oak barrels. A very unique bouquet of cocoa to start off with, mingled with violet aromas. Content was obviously very dense, almost Chateaueauf du Pape kind of density, almost jam packed of blackberry, very pleasant, soft and feminine. This wine possesses a great vintage of 2018 characteristics of density and loads of tannins lurking in the background, one does not feel the tannins unless one drinks at least half a bottle, that’s the beauty of a great vintage, one can enjoy the wine young while still can age it for another decade to really enjoy this wine down the road. Highly recommended for any wine lovers to try it out!
