2018 Verget Cuvee de la Butte Chablis

After the hat trick of the award winner 2017 vintage here (https://test.finewines.com.sg/verget chablis cuvee de la butte 2017/), I was slightly disappointed that the 2018 vintage did not follow the foot steps of 2017 and couldn’t pull off another killer production. I was puzzled, as 2017 in Chablis was hit by hail and frost, yet Verget did a magical vintage. 2018 weather was much more forgiving, although it’s a tale of two sides; it was extremely dry and warm, meanwhile Chablis produced extremely high yields in 2018, yet the content of this Cuvee de la Butte was slightly disappointing. There wasn’t enough acidity with the 2018 vintage, more driven by ripe fruits. While there wasn’t obvious fault, I do prefer my Chablis to be better balance with lively acidity and fruits should be more subdued in the background, and that’s what Verget did for the 2017 vintage.
