2020 Arnaud Baillot Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes versus 2020 Vosne Romanee

Both bottles came from the most prestigious lands in burgundy, with a huge concentration of Grand Cru appellations located within these two plots. You may probably be aware that the land prices in these two appellations have gone through the sky, thus producing wines from these two regions were not a cheap proposition. Arnaud has to rent plots in these two appellations to produce the wine. I decanted both bottles for an hour, along with my dinner that lasted about 2 hours, the total observation time for both bottles were 3 hours. Gevrey Chambertin VV bottle immediately took my attention with creamy big fruity bouquet, along with feminine and soft character. Vosne Romanee bouquet has very high quality oak profile mingled with slightly elevated acidity, the body was elegant although the taste was slightly skinny. First impression wise, the Gevrey Chambertin took limelight for sure. However, as I progressed with my dinner, I realized Vosne Romanee body started to morph into Gevrey Chambertin style, with the body of the fruits starting to have an overweight performance. The Vosne Romanee is undergoing a stunning and amazing evolution, while the Gevrey Chambertin remained status quo with no obvious evolution. My last glass had the Vosne Romanee overtaken as my favorite amongst the two bottles. Bottom line, never overlook the power of right amount of decanting time, in this case, three hours or more!
