Olivier Guyot Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Les Sorbets 2018 VS Domaine Pierre Amiot Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes 2018
Both wines came from one of the 20 Premier Cru vineyards located in Morey Saint Denis, thus it’s a good match to have a heads on clash. Les Sorbets production amounted to only 1,500 bottles while Aux Charmes amounted to 2,500 bottles as Amiot family owns substantial land parcels in MSD. Both wines were decanted for 2 hours. A whiff on Aux Charmes, it’s light and very mild oak presence. Fact checked that they age the wine in 33% of new oak barrels. The result was elegant, feminine and charming, really easy to drink with moderate sophistication. Les Sorbets was much more sophisticated, with aging in 30% new oak barrels and 70% single wine barrels. A whiff and it’s already revealing a hint of buttery toast and slightly leathery. The content was much more chunky and structured than Aux Charmes, initially a bit rough, but it turned softer and much more elegant thereafter with some food. Frankly, it’s like two favorite daughters, difficult to pick a favorite. Rather than picking a favorite, perhaps a different perspective would be food pairing; I would say Aux Charmes is more suitable to drink young and goes with lighter food like duck confit, while Les Sorbets is very suitable for long term aging and goes with heavier food like roast rack of lamb.
